Kimiidera
A working pilgrimage temple on a hillside above Wakaura Bay, reached by 231 stone steps — and, for a couple of weeks each spring, one of the first places in the Kansai region where the cherry blossoms open.
A pilgrimage stop, not a museum piece
Like Koyasan, Kimiidera is a functioning part of an active pilgrimage tradition rather than a static sight — pilgrims still walk the full 33-temple Saigoku circuit today, of which this is the second stop. The temple's name (literally "tree three well temple") refers to three wells on the grounds still fed by mountain spring water.
Most visitors climb the 231 steps on foot, which takes 10–15 minutes at an easy pace; a cable car covers the same climb for those who'd rather not.

Kimiidera has no lodging of its own — everyone stays in Wakayama City, about 10 minutes away by train, and visits as a day trip.

Before you go
The cherry blossoms typically peak in the second half of March, ahead of most of Kansai — if you're chasing early sakura, this is one of the more reliable spots to check first.
There is no dedicated hotel at Kimiidera itself; most visitors base themselves in Wakayama City, a short train ride away, and combine this with Wakayama Castle or Negoroji in the same day.

Getting to Kimiidera
From JR Wakayama Station, take the JR Kisei Line one stop to Kii Station, or continue to Kimiidera Station on the Wakayama Line — the temple gate is about a 10-minute walk from Kimiidera Station.
From Kansai Airport, the fastest route is via Wakayama Station (about 40 minutes), then the short local connection to Kimiidera.
